Information
Alternate Name Uhmera
First Appearance Satokowashi-hen
Portrayed By Noriko Hidaka

Eua (エウア) is a mysterious, antagonistic character, first appearing in Satokowashi-hen, and the main culprit behind the events of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Gō. She is a woman whose head is surrounded by an arc that resembles horns not unlike Hanyū's. She consistently refers to Rika as "the cat." She grants Satoko the power to live in loops to provide herself with entertainment. She refuses to reveal her name to Satoko and instead invites her to choose a name for her. She chooses part of Satoko's confused stammers to create the name "Eua," but her true name and nature remain currently unknown.

Character Summary[]

Eua is a powerful, supernatural being either living in or visiting the kakera world. Her powers are similar to but far stronger than Hanyū's. Just like Hanyū, she can rewind time and grant people the ability to "loop" via the endless number of kakera, but unlike her, Eua can also grant people the ability to retain their complete memories of previous loops. However, she says this ability can only be activated through the person dying, which implies that she’s not an omnipotent being, unless she was lying and just enjoys attaching that condition.

In Episode 21 of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Gō, she lures Satoko through the Saiguden to the realm of time fragments, and she grants the 1988's post-Matsuribayashi-hen Satoko the ability to loop back in time, which initiates the events of Satokowashi-hen and Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Gō. During her conversation with Satoko, she says "those who hold dominion over us are truly of cold heart" which means there are far more powerful beings in the Higurashi no Naku Koro ni universe than her.

Personality[]

Her way of speaking is shown to be somewhat mocking, arrogant, and old-fashioned. She is also shown to be sadistic, as she gets amused by Satoko's suffering, and the only reason she lets Satoko have her powers is so she could have some entertainment from her future actions. Curiously, she does not introduce herself to Satoko, and she refuses to give her real name to Satoko when asked. For her part, Satoko does not ask her to explain herself or provide any other details about herself.

As and then Sotsu progress, Eua expresses more sociopathic traits such as being manipulative, enjoying the suffering of others, and possessing superficial charm. When Hanyu confronts her, Eua reveals her true colors by capturing her and binding her so she could be forced to watch Satoko perform the Watanagashi ritual on Rika all while laughing at Hanyū's misery. As with most sociopaths, Eua feels boredom very easily and requires stimulation. She freely admits that she gave looping powers to Satoko to stave off her boredom.

Appearance[]

Featherine full

She wears a miko outfit similar to Hanyū's, with a long yellow scarf hanging over her shoulder, bearing some sort of medal. She's also shown holding a khakkahara (Buddhist monk staff common in East Asia). What appears to be her horns is actually a crescent-shaped artifact floating around her head. She has long, hime cut purple hair, purple eyes with vertical slit pupils. She also appears to use purple eyeliner.

Theories[]

  • Hanyū: it is possible that she is a fragment of Eua and the deity herself is the true form of Oyashiro-sama
    • In Nekodamashi, it is stated that when the memory disc around her head is damaged, she will become a completely different character. This was in reference to Hanyu's left horn. Furthermore, after Hanyū gave Rika the last of her powers to retrain the memories of the past loops even up until her death the crack on her horn started to glow. One could interpret this as Hanyū returning to her previous self. However, [1]when compared to Featherine, when Featherine's disc was damaged, she took on a lesser human persona, so the repairing of the disc (horns being a fragmented disc) could be reversion to a greater persona
    • In the most recent, as of the time of this writing, the first two episodes of Sotsu's God-Entertaining Chapter reveal that Hanyū and Eua know one another. Eua refers to her as one of her "failures." Unfortunately, with the completion of the series, their exact relationship is not explained.
  • Featherine: On an Livestream, Ryukishi07 acknowledged the similarity between the then unnamed Eua and Featherine Augustus Aurora of Umineko No Naku Koro ni, specifically in appearance. However, he refused to confirm the connection between the identity of the two characters and left the question of whether or not they are the same up to the viewer.
    • It is possible she is a less powerful past self of Featherine. Featherine mentioned she created "Bernkastel" (who resembles both Furude Rika and Frederica Bernkastel from Higurashi) from her "pet cat," and Eua described Rika as "the cat." Rika also cosplays in cat ears in an episode of .
    • An interview suggesting that Featherine was "manipulated by a higher order" resembles Eua's own lamentations of "those who hold dominion over us".

Trivia[]

  • She's the mysterious smiling figure appearing in the opening.
    • Since Episode 21 of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Gō opening, her shadowy filter is removed.
  • Despite the similarity of appearance and personality between the two characters, they do not share the same voice actresses: as Featherine was voiced by Michiko Neya.
  • "Sharks and the Jets!": Hanyū usually wears the miko clothing that Rika wears when Rika performs Watanagashi. When Satoko transforms she wears the same miko-style robes that Eua wears. When she and Rika clash, their conflict is similar to Eua and Hanyū's conflict.

  1. God-Entertaining Chapter Part One reveals that Hanyū gathered the fragmented dust of multiple time fragments she shattered through her will into her . . . um . . . crack . . . which made it glow but also appears to either have given her the power to help Rika one last time or, perhaps, travel to another plane/area to find Eua.
