First Appearance | Onikakushi-hen |
Most children who live in Hinamizawa attend school at a rural office building that belongs to the forest services. Because of the size of the village, there is only one classroom, teacher, and principal that provide for all ages and grades with separate subjects designed for the respective grades. At the time of Onikakushi-hen, Mion is the eldest student and class representative. Keiichi enters as the superior student who often helps Mion, Rena, and other students with the classwork. Satoko, Rika, Rena, Keiichi, and Mion are the usual members of The Club in most arcs. Tsumihoroboshi-hen reveals that a total of fifteen students attend the school. Depending on the arc, Hōjō Satoshi and Shion sometimes attend. Satoshi is a student before Keiichi arrives, and Shion alternatively attends as her sister and sometimes openly as Shion. Other known and named students include Tomita Daiki, and Okamura Suguru.
In Tsumihoroboshi-hen, the school is taken over by Rena. Rena holds her friends and schoolmates hostage and threatens to kill them all with a homemade bomb planted on the roof of the school. Keiichi manages to defuse the bomb and regain Rena's sanity. However, in the alternate version of Tsumihoroboshi-hen, Yoigoshi-hen, the school is destroyed and all of the children were killed by Rena. In Minagoroshi-hen, some of the villagers along with most of the principle characters are gathered in the school to be gassed to death by Takano and "Tokyo".
Trivia[]
- In front of the school, there are some heavy machinery left there by the forest services. According to Keiichi, these trucks are actually broken, but the forest services don't have the financial background to fix them
- Behind the school building, there is a small vegetable and spice garden. This garden is owned by Chie Rumiko, who grows plants there for her curry meals, but the students are the ones who do the actual gardening.
