Isshiki Kururu (一色 くるる) is a member of the Polaris cult and a main character of the chapters of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei.
Character Summary[]
Currently, her actual first name is unknown. She initially gives Keitarō, and later the rest of the Gang, and to Inori in a flashback, the nickname, "Kururu (くるる)," in both chapters. She finally reveals her last name in this flashback.
In both chapters, Kururu is a student in the Gang's middle school in Okinomiya, and a member, with her father, of the cult Polaris which moved to Hinamizawa. Her father acts as a spokesman for Polaris to the Hinamizawa village council and the leader of the offensive wing of the cult.
She appears the polar opposite of her friend and fellow cult member Inori . Whereas Inori is shy, quiet, and meek, Kuroro is brash, outgoing, and frequently teases Keitarō with sexual innuendo. She demonstrates this behavior when she first confronts Keitarō after he helps Inori. Keitarō invites her to participate in the Club. Keitarō accepts her teasing as playful, but his friends find her irritating and continue to mistrust Polaris. She claims that her father suffered abuse from her mother, which is how they became members. She further claims that she does not hold to the tenets of the cult; she freely approaches Keitarō and the rest against these tenets.
Her character arc then differs between the two fragments:
Oniokoshi-hen[]
Alone she angrily denounces what she is doing, and she turns over what she has learned from the children of the three great families to her father. She accompanies the offensive group of the cult, Ring of Stars, to the Maebara home to murder his family, and she is elevated to be a member with the name Miaplacidus. She joins in the immolation of the home.
Hoshiwatashi-hen[]
She supports inviting Keitarō to attend Polaris' own festival which they hold on the same day and night of the Watanagashi Festival. With the disappearance of Kimiyoshi Kisaku, Sakiko and the villagers blame Polaris. Scratching their heads, they descend upon the compound and begin interrogating and murdering the members. Kururu, Inori, and Keitarō eventually make their way into the "church" with the Holy Mother. Identifying herself as a member of the Ring of Stars by revealing her name, Kururu confronts the Hinamizawa villagers who break into the church to allow Inori and Keitarō the opportunity to escape.
Appearance[]
Like Inori, Kururu appears petite. She wears her hair short with two braids. On color panels, her eyes appear brown. Outside of school, she wears revealing clothes. She teases Keitarō by offering to reveal more of her midriff to throw him off during games.
Personality[]
Kururu appears outgoing, fun, uninhibited, and a number of other adverbs When They Cry Wiki will avoid for brevity. She readily teases Keitarō with sexual innuendo. In her first meeting, she teases that he could have his way with Inori, since she cannot tell anyone about it. She then teases that he might try to take advantage of herself. Keitarō tolerates this behavior and perhaps finds her kind in her own way, since she seems to help bring Inori out of her shell.
However, this is all an act: she is a devote follower of Polaris, and is helping her father gain information to be used against the Hinamizawa village council.
Relationships[]
Maebara Keitarō[]
She basically throws herself into Keitarō's world when he helps Inori. She appears to enjoy teasing him, making numerous sexual innuendo, and he seems to tolerate this and appreciate her apparent willingness to be his friend. It would appear that she appreciates him for his interest in Inori, but subsequent revelations suggest this is all a façade. Arg!
Inori[]
She appears a supportive friend of Inori. She is instrumental in getting Inori to associate with Keitarō. She supports Inori when he attends their festival. However, given the revelations of her true motivations, she may simply see Inori as a tool.
Isshiki[]
In both fragments, it initially appears that she rebels against her father. She claims that he joined the cult after domestic abuse from her mother, but she has not. In reality, she is devoted to him to the point of calling him "father" when child members of Polaris must consider all adults to be their mothers and fathers. He, in turn, has her behave to open to inculcate her with the children of the leading families of Hinamizawa. He does appear proud of her. He elevates her to membership of the Ring of Stars before she dies in the fire the set in the Maebara home.
Etymology[]
- Isshiki means "one color, article" (一色).
Trivia[]
- A Girl Does Not have a First Name!: Kururu gives this nickname, "spoken in the hiragana," which is occasionally misspelled in Fanilation. When she introduces herself to Inori, she gives this as her first name.
