Mikazuki Inori (朏 依乃里) is a member of the Polaris cult and a main character of chapters of Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni Rei.

Character Summary[]

In both chapters, Inori is a student in the Gang's middle school in Okinomiya, and a member, with her mother, of the cult Polaris which moved to Hinamizawa. Keitarō takes an interest in her, and In both chapters she become important in the unfolding plot – Arg!

She eventually reveals that her father was physically abusive. Her mother finally broke away from him with her to seek protection in Polaris which promises help for victims of domestic violence. While the actual complete tenets of the Polaris remain unknown, adherents keep to themselves to the point of not acknowledging greetings from those outside. Keitarō sees this as a challenge in his goals of first making friends with everyone, then second reconciling Polaris with the rest of the villagers of Hinamizawa.

He fails in his attempts to become friends with members of Polaris in school. When he tries to greet Inori, she, meekly, stumbles and falls down the stairs, injuring her leg. Her friends shrink from his exhortations for them to help her with him. He carries her to the nurses office and stays with her while she receives treatment. During this time, she remains silent, even to questions from the nurse. Nevertheless, when she leaves, she stops for a moment to perform a bow to Keitarō.

Her character arc then differs between the two fragments:

Oniokoshi-hen[]

To Keitarō's shock, Inori accompanies the members of the Ring of Stars who break into his home and murder his grandfather and grandmother. She stands singing with them as they burn his house and themselves around him.

Hoshiwatashi-hen[]

She and Kururu invite Keitarō to attend Polaris' own festival which they hold on the same day and night of the Watanagashi Festival. With the disappearance of Kimiyoshi Kisaku, Sakiko and the villagers blame Polaris. Scratching their heads, they descend upon the compound and begin interrogating and murdering the members. Kururu, Inori, and Keitarō eventually make their way into the "church" with the Holy Mother. Her mother deems her contaminated by an outsider; the Holy Mother suggests that she follow her happiness. Identifying herself as a member of the Ring of Stars by revealing her name, Kururu confronts the Hinamizawa villagers who break into the church to allow Inori and Keitarō the opportunity to escape. However, they leave the building to be confronted by a blood-covered Sakiko wielding a hoe.

Appearance[]

Inori is small and carries herself meek. She wears her hair long with braids. She is usually seen wearing her school uniform, but on the Polaris compound she dons the clothes of the other cult members.

Personality[]

When They Cry Wiki confesses great difficulty in describing her without the involvement of the the word "meek." It is clear that she was deeply affected by her father's abuse against her mother and, by implication, herself. She does not speak to nor acknowledge those outside of Polaris.

Relationships[]

Maebara Keitarō[]

While Keitarō legitimately cares that she got hurt when he approached her, he remains determined to become her friend and include her and other members of Polaris in the community of Hinamizawa as well as the Club despite her reticence. There are hints that she appreciates his concern initially, and she enjoys his visit to her community during their festival. When They Cry Wiki is sure this will all work out well for them despite the colored panels introducing both chapters that might, perhaps, suggest otherwise. Arg.

Ishikawa Kururu[]

Outspoken and uninhibited, she claims that she only accompanied her father into Polaris and does not believe in their tenets. Reality suggests otherwise – Arg! Be that as it may, she serves as a conduit for Keitarō to come to know Inori.

Inori's Mom[]

{Has it going on! Creating space with some details. FEEL FREE to complete. Will eventually create proper link/page when enough known.} According to Inori, she is an only child whose father was physically abusive to both her and her mother. Eventually, her mother decided to leave her husband and seek protection with Polaris. Like her daughter, she appears quiet and meek. She also appears legitimately devoted to the tenets of Polaris: when Keitarō replaces her spoiled groceries, she later throws them away.

Etymology[]

  • "A Girl has a Name!": 朏 (Mikazuki) means "New" and "Crescent Moon."
  • Inori means "rely on" (依) (i), "from" (乃) (no) and "village" (里) (ri).
