Eriko, Tomomi and Kikuko are three girls who were in the same "The House of Skies/Emptiness" (空の家) Orphanage as Tanashi Miyoko. They first appear in Matsuribayashi-hen. Together they attempt to escape to what turns out to be a mythical wonderful orphanage "just over the mountain." Both Eriko and Tomoni know the punishments used by the guards, such as the "Casket Punishment," which Tomomi describes as "one of the better ones." Kikuko seems a newer orphan than Eriko and Tomomi since she does not know much about the punishments, and fixates on her mother.
The three girls talk about "The House of Love" orphanage to the newest orphan Miyoko. The head is called "mom" and the children are happy; however, they also heard about what happened to the first group that attempted to flee. These orphans fled in various direction, and only one was found but was killed by the punishment metted out by the staff. They quote the names of a few punishments to Miyoko "the Dismembered Pig," "the Squashed Caterpillar," "the Duck Unable to Drink Water," as well as the "Casket Punishment."
The bravist one Eriko takes the key from the chicken coop which also opens the exit door. She then convinces the others to flee with her. She is caught and killed by orphanage staff; the fate of her friends Tomomi and Kikuko remains unknown.
In the anime, how Eriko dies is not explained; the manga depicts her shown to Miyoko by the guards.
